Signora Riccadini, rope dancer, 1788

ropedancers

Following on from the article on Marina Rossi, rope dancer, I have been scouring newspapers, journals and books for further evidence of female rope dancers. In the Ipswich Journal for the 6th September 1788 I found this notice:

WIRE DANCING

By the unrivalled Signora Riccadini, who will display Two flags at once, in a most capital manner, and get through a hoop; never attempted on the wire by any other person.

The EGYPTIAN PYRAMID,

By NINE capital PERFORMERS,

TIGHT ROPE DANCING

By the LITTLE DEVIL, the Wonderful Child of Promise only 44 months old, and Signora Riccadini, who is allowed to be the best Rope Dancer in the World: she will jumper over a garter 6 feet from the rope.
